RECOVERY ROAD Part 6: Entitled

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. When have you experienced a person in authority serving you? Describe that experience.

2. Discuss a time when you yielded your time, money, possessions, or influence on behalf of someone else.

3. Think of one thing to which you are entitled. How do you respond when that sense of entitlement is challenged?

4. What is the biggest barrier to leveraging your money on behalf of others?

5. Read Mark 10:42–45. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (NIV)

How would perceptions of the church change if Christians took to heart Jesus’ command to serve instead of be served?

6. Read John 13:13–17. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. (NIV)

What is one way that you can leverage your time, money, possessions, or influence on behalf of others?

MOVING FORWARD

Recovery begins when we leverage our entitlements for the benefit of those less entitled. In a year that promises to be financially painful for the nation, God could use the church as a major blessing.

What would you need to do to organize your finances so that it is possible to tithe ten percent of your income to the local church for the next year?

CHANGING YOUR MIND “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for man.” Mark 10:45
